Boston Local: Beacon Hill Oasis

7/13/2014

One of my favorite pastimes is to scour the internet looking for pictures of amazingly decorated places and spaces from around the world. It's kind of a funny hobby to have especially when some of the most beautiful spaces I've seen belong to some of my nearest and dearest here in Boston and across the country. Their apartments and homes are more than gawk-worthy and I am so excited to be able to feature a few of them here on Champagne and Peanuts!
The first is a Beacon Hill oasis that belongs to my dear friend from college, Edith, her soon-to-be hubby, Warner, and their adorable Westie, Piper. Edith and Warner have brought traditional and modern together in a sun-drenched space full of personality and unique touches. Not only is Edith the sweetest and most loyal friend a girl could ask for, she is also impossibly stylish. She's the girl who introduced me to my first pair of designer jeans and who opened my eyes to a world beyond The Gap (I still love The Gap don't get me wrong). It's been so fun to watch as her style has grown and Edith and Warner certainly have a knack for making even a rented space feel like their own.
"A lot of the furniture we purchased years ago.  The rest has been added along the way as we have moved and had adventures in different places. We have moved 9 times in the last 7 years between the 2 of us so really have it down at this point. We have only kept the things we really love. We also seem to have collected some wonderful pieces of art along the way.  My dad is an artist and Warner's mom is an interior designer here in Boston so they have certainly helped us curate a lovely collection" - Edith
It's no surprise that this Beacon Hill abode is charming, sweet, and a little silly... Just like Edith and Warner are.

"The personalized coasters were a gift from Warner's sister and the elephant was a gift from my Mom when I graduated from Tufts." - Edith

The green square cut emerald ring was handmade by one Edith's best friends. The oval amethyst ring is vintage Tiffany & Co. circa 1984 and was a gift from her parents on her 21st birthday. Similarly the large lady of the night pendent is vintage Tiffany & Co. from around the same time period.
Picture
"The painting above the fireplace is by Mikel Wintermantel and is the view from my grandparents house in Cohassett, a place very close to the heart." - Warner
"I've been longing after the work of Ariele Alasko for years. She makes such beautiful things but everything is always sold out. Warner has been trying for a long time to get me a wooden spoon and he surprised me with one earlier this year. I absolutely love it." - Edith

The chairs are vintage Knoll purchased in NYC and covered in chic faux lambskins from Ikea. A great way to add iconic pieces and current trends in an affordable way.

"A lot of the artwork in the apartment is my Dad's. The piece above the TV "Lady on Stairs" is one of my most prized possessions. My farther is a brilliant artist and took the photograph."  - Edith

"Anyone that knows me well knows I love nothing more than sleeping in on a rainy day, having breakfast, and reading a book in bed. I could probably live in that bed and be happy.  We have tons of fluffy pillows, the softest sheets in the world, and the most perfect puppy to keep us warm on cold Boston nights." - Edith
"The jewelry tree & jewelry box are both from Anthropology, the stones were collected from various places close to my heart (our lake house in Michigan, travels in Africa, Esalen in Big Sur etc).  Warner carved the mini piper with his bare hands as a Christmas gift. The photograph on the wall was taken by Jack and is of my grandmother and the other is a photo of my mom and dad is from one of their first dates." - Edith
"A good man always carries a hanky."- Warner
Warner's extensive handkerchief collection next to a handmade gift from Edith. "I've just seen a face" by the Beatles is the couple's favorite song and the Westie imagery found around the apartment is of course inspired by their sweet dog, Piper.
"Our favorite thing to do is to walk Piper along the brick streets at night with the gas lamps blazing and beautiful windowboxes full of hydrangea.  It's perfectly romantic and makes you feel transplanted to another century." -Edith
Thank you Edith and Warner for sharing your beautiful home!

I've already done some website perusing and these are some of the pieces I'll be looking to take home with me:
1. Vertical Stripe Ring // 2. Kyanite Cocktail Ring // 3. Small Textured Cuff //
4. Angel Wing Earrings // 5. Thin Collar Necklace // 6. Goddess Cuff
Christy's jewelry is stunning (and I'm not just saying that because she is my sister-in-law). All of the pieces are handmade by Christy in Charleston, SC and they are just so unique and special. My CJJ pieces are by far my most complimented jewelry and I absolutely love her eclectic and impossibly cool style.

I didn't shiver and attempt to turtle as far into my winter coat as possible when I walked out of my front door this morning. There may be an end to this winter after all! I don't want to jinx anything but..... Happy Spring!

Spring is all about new beginnings and there are so many new things to be excited about. Newlywed bliss... great friends moving into town... great friends growing their families (aka more babies and puppies to snuggle)... and so much more.

Puritan & Company

We journeyed across the Charles last Saturday for dinner and it left me wondering why we haven't been doing this more often. In theory Cambridge just seems so far.... well it's not. And while I love all that Boston has to offer, Cambridge is jumping!

We had an absolutely delicious and lovely time at Puritan & Company. Everything from the eclectic decor to the oyster bar in the back had me drooling, and the food did not disappoint. The wild mushroom + farm egg was gone the second it hit the table and the pork schnitzel was killer.

We had to make some tough decisions as there were just too many delicious looking things to choose from! A few things on our list to try for next time:
1) Swordfish Pastrami
2) Thaw in the Straw Cocktail
3) Brunch

Sweat Baby Sweat....

On Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure of hitting the gym with some of Boston's finest bloggers for a spin class at Flywheel. I've been pretty open about my love for Exhale's Cardio Fusion and Barre classes, so I was pretty skeptical when I traded my sticky socks for a pair of cycling shoes.
I've only been spinning  a handful of times so I was a bit nervous that I wouldn't know what to do or even how to clip my shoes in and out of the pedals, but the staff was so super helpful and friendly in setting us up.

Once well all got settled, the lights went down, Rachele our instructor started bumping some seriously good beats, and it was love at first song. The energy and music was amazing and for the entire 45 minutes I felt like I was at the best dance party since Sway circa 2007... when really I was just getting my butt kicked by a fantastic workout.
I'm so excited to have discovered Flywheel and am excited to add it to my  workout repertoire. It's the perfect way to change things up, have so much fun, and get a stellar workout.

I also won a cute tote + salad blaster from Sweet Green (another Boston favorite)! "Beets don't kale my vibe" It's so fitting for me and my love for beets (and kale!).... get yours here.

Thanks to Jessica over at Gluten Fee Boston Girl and to Flywheel for the fantastic afternoon!

Is it Sunday already? How do these weekends fly by so quickly? As I've started to capture and document all the fun things I'm able to squeeze in over the weekend, I am realizing that my plans seem to revolve around where I'm getting my next meal. Honestly I wouldn't have it any other way :)

2. Saturday lunching // Douzo
3. Surprise Snow Storm #love
4. Sunday Java Crush // Flour  #addict

Today's Obsession... Pregnant Women at the Golden Globes

These women make pregnancy look unfairly good. I mean... unbelievable. While I'm obsessed with Kerry Washington in any state, this photo in Balenciaga made me adore her even more further proving that Olivia Pope is impeccably dressed for any occasion.  Don't even get me started with Olivia Wilde (in Gucci). What a babe.

For those not rocking the baby bump glow, I have to give applause to Margot Robbie in Gucci. Everything about this is completely sexy but totally classy. I Adore.

The Evaporation of New England's Ski Industry

This month bostonmagazine.com published a powerful story about the evaporation of New England's ski industry.  While I openly admit that I am a complete ski snob and normally would prefer to ski out west, this article made me extremely sad.

I grew up skiing and skiing provided the foundation for many of my fondest childhood and adulthood memories. What a bummer it is to think that our kids might not get to experience it in quite the same way. Even further with the cost of operations ever increasing at these resorts and community ski slopes, the price of lift tickets keeps rising further and further out of reach for many families.

This article made me realize how much I've taken this amazing experience for granted. In a world consumed by constant communication being out on the mountain with your family and friends with no distractions is a rare and awesome experience. Just this year while I was on a ski trip with my family, the storm clouds rolled in and my sister and I decided to take a break in  a lodge while the others continued to ski. Before this moment I couldn't tell you the last time I had a chance to sit down alone with my sister and just talk. Living on different coasts our relationship is usually sustained by text messages. Looking back, this conversation was such a highlight in my year. Thank you skiing.

In short: Grab your loved ones and get out there on the mountain while you still can. Embrace that wind-chill and revel in those frozen toes, because before we know this awesome experience might be out of our reach.
