Can I get a Light?

5/29/2014

Our apartment is long on so many wonderful things. We're long on exposed brick, hardwood floors, and windows, and we're very lucky to be long on space. The one thing we're short on is lighting. And I mean like really short. 2,000sq ft and there are 4 lights total. Yikes. We've been sitting in the dark long enough friends... next on the to-do list is to get some lights up in here!
1. Telescoping Otis light // 2. Dumont Pendant // 3. Ranarp Floor Lamp // 4. Luna Clear
5. Globe Pendant // 6. Studio Pendant Light  // 7. Vaster Pendant Lamp // 8. Marble Floor Lamp

Whether you're hitting up Figawi, kite surfing in the Carolinas, enjoying crab cakes and football down by the Chesapeake Bay, or heading up to north for some lake time... I hope it's a great one!

Memorial Day Prep

Memorial day is one of the best holidays because not only do we get to honor those who protect and serve this great nation, but also by default it's casual, laid-back, and (hopefully) sun soaked. I love any excuse to wear jean shorts and sneakers for multiple days in a row (don't judge).

Instead of bringing your normal batch of Jello shots to your parties try these fancy schmancy adult versions! (and if you don't typically bring Jello shots to parties you should definitely start)

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

When you're planning a wedding all you get is advice. Advice. Advice. Advice. And thank goodness, because how else would we all get through that crazy process? One of the best pieces of advice that we received was to not do a honeymoon right after the wedding, but rather plan it for a few months later. There are pros and cons to doing it both ways, but knowing us I knew we would need something else to look forward to after being on such a high during the wedding. At the same time I really wanted to share in that experience of being whisked off to some remote place to relish in what just went down... enter the 4 day mini-moon. The perfect way to have your cake and eat it too!

We chose to go to St. Lucia (so hot right now) for a few days post-wedding craziness to recharge the batteries and reflect on the wedding week. We stayed at the oh so beautiful Viceroy at Sugar Beach and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The hotel is stunning, the food is delicious, and the service is absolutely impeccable.
What is so cool about this hotel is that it's an old sugar plantation and mill with the original plantation home now serving as guest reception as well as restaurants and some very chic bars.I just love that it isn't your typical resort. It is very small and it feels so intimate. Normally I'm a "stick to my travel buddies" type of person when I'm at a resort, but we actually got to know a couple of the other guests and had a really great time chatting at the pool and over cocktails (not mutually exclusive).

We chose to stay down on the beach in a bungalow, but there are also these amazing cottages up on the hill that have absolutely stunning views of the harbor. It's pretty much heaven on earth.

So many people have asked to see pics from our mini-moon and I've been so hesitant to put them out there because we literally just lazed around like a bunch of lazies! You can actually hike the larger of the two Pitons (the smaller one is too steep), but Chip was too busy doing other things (exhibit A above) and we never seemed to get around to it... gotta save something to save for next time right?! I adore this picture of Chip snoozing so peacefully.

For me one of the highlights of the trip was the AMAZING spa. It was seriously beyond words amazing. The entire spa is built like a giant tree-house and each treatment room is its own tree-house bungalow. The services were to die for and I it was a truly can't miss experience (especially for spa aficionados!)
As you can see we spent a lot of time in over-sized robes... which is obviously a telltale sign of a great vacation.

Have I told you about my obsession with this Brooklyn based designer? Well I'm obsessed with her beautiful work, so you can imagine my delight and surprise when I found this feature Lonny did on her very own apartment. It's everything I would have imagined and so much more!

"Some days I get tired of having accessories everywhere, so I clear off all of the surfaces. Other times I'm nostalgic, and I really want the momentos from our honeymoon in Thailand on display" - Katy Skelton for Lonny Magazine
"Embrace change without being wasteful. The design process is an evolution so give yourself permission to change things."
- Katy Skelton for Lonny Magazine

"Our friends come over all the time and tell us our apartment looks completely different from the last time they were here, but I like to live with my products so that I can make little tweaks if I want to. It's my personal quality assurance process" - Katy Skelton for Lonny Magazine

We've already custom ordered this table (with a round top because we are so clumsy that those amazing triangle edges would just mean a lot of bruises in our house) for our apartment and we are eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

Apartment Envy

5/8/2014

Every once and a while (like every day) I come across an apartment that makes me totally green with envy. While I loved the little apartment I shared with my great roomie  (I'm looking at you Edubbs) on the L.E.S in NYC ... this is the kind of apartment that makes me wish we had considered living in Brooklyn at one point or another.... and makes me wish I wasn't so terrified of bed bugs and had taken advantage of the amazing vintage finds that are practically littered around the city.

I found this amazing Carroll Gardens apartment on Design Sponge and I just had to re-share/re-post. What I love about this place is that each piece tells a story and it somehow all comes together so effortlessly.

I Heart Mom(s)!

Have you seen this video yet?   World's Toughest Job

I don't know about you, but lately I've been feeling even more appreciative of Moms and I'm convinced Mother's day should be everyone's favorite day of the year. No seriously... Moms are totally the best. Besides the fact that they are so clean and always smell so nice, they keep this show called life running like clock-work and that is some tough beeswax.

This year was awesome because I got to spend so much time with my Mom while wedding planning. Because we live on opposite sides of the country, visits are usually only on holidays, but what a treat this year was!

My Top 5 Mom Moments of the Year:
1) How she worked tirelessly to make sure our wedding day was completely perfect... tirelessly people!!! All while still rocking her full-time real job
2) How she continues to work and build her career while most people her age are calling it quits
3) How totally and completely thrilled she was when I installed emoticons on her iphone. We don't even text words anymore...we have entire conversations just using emoticons now.
4)  How she waited until I was nearly 30 and married before she stopped paying my cellphone bill. It's the little things that are hardest to let go of.
5) How she now "hashtags" everything by writing out the word "hashtag".

Don't forget that Mother's Day is just around the corner on Sunday, May 11th!
